Hypno-Doula in McAllen, TX!

Hey everyone! I’m so happy to announce I’ve earned my Hypno-Doula certificate from Hypnobabies.

I have been so fortunate to have worked with past clients who really amazed me with their hypnobirthing experiences. There was a sense of peace and calm in the birth space and I remember walking away thinking, this is how birth should be featured in all the movies - people need to see this version more often! (I suppose Hollywood would quickly ditch that idea because it’s missing all the drama.)

As I dive deeper and deeper into birth work and birth support, I’ve learned that birth support can be so varied and I’m always open to whatever each journey brings. My role is to:

  • Offer emotional support for my clients. Affirmations are so valuable. Sometimes partners need a gentle reminder of how to ensure their person knows how amazing they are. This can go a really long way when it comes to a partnership bonding and moving through this journey together.

  • Physically comfort them in their birthing experience. I do this with massage, hip squeezes, tens unit, positional changes and various other doula bag tools I carry with me.

  • Provide any information/knowledge or resources to them so they can feel confident and empowered to make their decisions. After all, this is their birth, their baby, and will ultimately their memory of transitioning into parenthood.

With this hypo-doula certification, I have yet another tool to navigate parents’ birth choices. I can recognize their path, be on the same page with how they wish to navigate their experience and know the specifics of using hypnosis in birth. It’s so important to be able to meet families where they are to ensure they can achieve the birth experience they want.

So, while I was familiar with the terminology before, I now feel even more empowered in my role as a doula serving clients who are Hypnobabies trained. I’m so excited to bring this skillset to future births!

Jessica is a midwife student, local doula, lactation consultant, and birth assistant at Holy Family Birthing Center in Weslaco, TX. (She’s amazing.) To my right, Brandi Kennedy who recently retired as a birth doula but now serves our community as the Clinic Manager at Holy Family Birthing Center in Weslaco, TX. Brandi served the RGV as a doula and childbirth educator for 10+ years and has been such an incredible friend and mentor in my life. I’m so thankful for both of these wonderful humans.

Your RGV Doulas: Meet Up

This past Easter weekend, some doulas and birth workers gathered to brain storm and continue growing our local doula community.

You’d be surprised how often we all come across new clients who have never heard of us or didn’t know doulas existed.

Doulas have been around for many years here in the RGV but we have seen a recent growth in folks entering this field of work in the past 5 years or so. It makes this job a whole lot less lonely, I’ll tell you that much.

Birth work is never meant to be done alone, just like parenting. We need support when we process the work we do, we need guidance from peers when we are trying to serve our clients. We need new perspectives when we are troubleshooting hiccups with our businesses or family life. It’s a lot of behind the scenes work, as we often see for small business owners.

Recently, Brandi Kennedy (former doula - iykyk) started working for Holy Family Birthing Center and is currently the clinical manager there. In her new role, Brandi has reached out to local doulas to meet some new folks who are passionate about birth work. One of the lovely people Brandi invited us to meet was Claudia, originally from NYC. Claudia brings us excitement and passion with her ideas of growth and collaboration. With that said, Your RGV Doulas came together (we were missing a few faces) and got to introduce ourselves, share a little about what we do and presented ideas about how we can continue to serve the amazing RGV parents or soon-to-be-parents.

How can we let you know what we do?

How can we bring the right doula to you and your birth team?

How can we best serve you and meet you where you are?

Those are all very common questions we see from families and sometimes, families go through their entire planning process never finding us. We’d love to grow and show everyone how beneficial a doula can be for you and your family. Whether that doula is needed for your birth journey or your postpartum healing. Pregnancy is not always easy, it comes with hardship at times, and other times, with extremely difficult diagnosis or decisions to make. Having a doula who understands and can hold space for you would be ideal. No one should ever have to embark on a pregnancy journey alone.

If you have ideas on how Your RGV Doulas can grow, we’d love to hear them. In the mean time, here are some photos of this past weekend. Gathering is always so inspiring to me. I’ll cherish these photos for years to come. :)

Welcoming Gabriela

Surrogate Birth of Gabriela

Brownsville, Texas Home Water Birth

When I first learned about Jen’s journey with surrogacy, I was excited and anxiously awaiting for this baby to “stick” and make their journey home… to their parent’s arms.

I can’t imagine how much emotion, time, and patience these lovely folks had to navigate to get to this day. I’m deeply humbled to have had a glimpse of this joyous day with them.

If you’ve never met Jen, she’s an incredible human and one of Brownsville’s newest midwives. Her birth center is Heart of Gaia and she helps families achieve their goals of having a physiological birth either at home or at her beautiful birth center.

Jen has the only clear birth tub in South Texas and my gosh, I’ve been patiently waiting to document someone’s birth in that gorgeous tub. I’m holding on to hope. #CrossingAllFingersAndToes

Come on a little trip down memory lane with me and take a peek at Gabriela’s birth. She was surrounded by people who have loved her long before conception. Welcome to the world, Gabriela!

Newborn Photography & Covid-19

In-home newborn photography by Norma Hess at Sojourning Birth McAllen, Texas.

Bringing home baby during a global pandemic is not something any of us saw coming when we were ringing in the new year a few months ago…

Many mamas schedule their newborn sessions months in advance (some probably before this pandemic stuff happened) and some just days prior to their due date… no matter when you booked, social distancing rules are making photo sessions more challenging these days.

To ensure you and your family are safe during a newborn session with us, we have implemented some changes in the way we do things but our lifestyle/documentary approach has actually worked to our advantage.

Covid-19 newborn photographer comes to your home with a mask and remains at a safe distance from your home. SojourningBirth.com

I am able to keep a safe distance from you and your family as we photograph your family in a very vulnerable time of your life. You’re free to be in the comfort of your own home which adds a wonderful level of relaxation to your experience. No need to do anything special either, we’ll find a cozy corner on the couch, the bed, or outside to create some beautiful photos.

In the past, I may have adjusted your hair or wrapped up baby in a blanket for you, now I simply allow every move to flow organically and I am able to provide you the space to do these things yourself so that I never come in contact with you or your sweet new baby. (Trust me, there’s nothing I love more than being able to wrap your adorable little ones but your safety will always be my #1 priority.)

So what does a session with me look like?

See for yourself. Here, you’ll find a couple of families who have opened their homes for us to document their new little humans.

If you are looking for a photographer for your upcoming newborn photos, feel free to reach out to us! We’d love to come by and document this season of your life while keeping your safety in mind.
